Even though the announcement was made on a Tuesday—the kind of news release that tech reporters now anticipate nearly every week—it had a distinct feel to it. It is more than just a business handshake for Meta and Broadcom to extend their custom chip partnership through 2029. It’s a fairly loud signal that the single-vendor AI stack era is quietly coming to an end.
These days, you can see the steel, trucks, and cranes idling close to the fence line if you stroll past any data center construction site in central Oregon or northern Virginia. The chips that Meta and Broadcom are co-designing will eventually come to life somewhere inside those buildings.

The size of the inference problem Meta is attempting to solve is what impresses me about the deal. Model training is glamorous, headline-grabbing work. The unglamorous cousin is inference, which performs the same tasks billions of times every day, such as ranking a reel here, placing an advertisement in someone’s feed there, or creating a chatbot response for a São Paulo teen. It accumulates. Specifically designed for that task, the Meta Training and Inference Accelerator, or MTIA for short, is optimized to rank content and suggest posts on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Meta seems to have finally realized what Google discovered years ago with its tensor processing units: you should probably control the silicon when you control the workload.
However, it’s crucial to avoid interpreting this as NVIDIA’s demise. It isn’t. The fact that Meta is simultaneously pledging to deploy millions of NVIDIA chips and six gigawatts of AMD GPUs tells you everything about how hyperscalers actually make purchases. They use hedging. They become more varied.

Because the alternative is to redo half of their stack, developers build AI systems around CUDA, NVIDIA’s software ecosystem, which is still the moat no one has crossed. The versatility and memory bandwidth required for training next-generation models are still beyond the capabilities of purpose-built inference chips.
Meanwhile, Broadcom is having the kind of year that changes Wall Street’s perception of a business. It inked comparable agreements with Alphabet and Anthropic earlier this month. The CEO, Hock Tan, is now leaving Meta’s board to take on an advisory position. This is an odd move that suggests both businesses wanted to eliminate any potential conflicts of interest before this project grew. Following the announcement, Broadcom’s stock increased 3.5% in extended trading. Meta hasn’t really moved. Investors appear to think that, at least for the time being, the chip designer has more potential than the consumer.
What this means for the larger AI infrastructure market over the next three or four years is more difficult to predict. In 2026 alone, hyperscalers are expected to spend more than $600 billion on AI infrastructure—a sum that is nearly meaningless. GPUs won’t be replaced by custom silicon. However, it will eat away at the edges, especially in inference workloads where flexibility is less important than efficiency. It’s still unclear if smaller companies, such as AI startups and second-tier cloud providers, will take this route or stay trapped in NVIDIA’s ecosystem because they can’t afford to do otherwise.
As this develops, it’s difficult to ignore the fact that the AI infrastructure stack is beginning to resemble the cloud computing stack from ten years ago—layered, disjointed, and full of specialized components working together. If the single-vendor dream ever existed, it appears to be quietly fading away. And, virtually unnoticed, Broadcom has established itself as the essential go-between for that change.
